Privacy Policy

Squares (“Squares”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) is a social platform for local communities, places, events and conversations. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, when it may be shared, and the choices available to you.

Information you provide

When you create or use a Squares account, you may provide information such as your name, username, email address, profile picture, biography, profession, city or country, and other profile details. You may also provide questions, chat messages, replies, comments, event information, photos, videos, audio recordings, reactions and other content you choose to share.

Authentication information

Squares supports email and password authentication and may also support third-party sign-in providers such as Apple and Google. When you use a third-party authentication provider, Squares may receive information such as your email address, name and account identifier as authorized by you. Squares does not receive your Apple or Google password.

Location and place information

With your permission, Squares may use approximate or precise device location to show nearby communities, places, events and other geographically relevant content. You can control location access in your device settings. Searches for places or addresses may also be processed by third-party map or location providers.

Device and technical information

We may automatically process technical information such as device type, operating system, app version, language, IP address, session information, crash information and diagnostic data needed to operate, secure and improve the service.

How we use information

We use information to provide and maintain Squares, create and manage accounts, deliver community and messaging features, show relevant content, send notifications, provide location-based features, moderate content, investigate reports, prevent abuse and fraud, troubleshoot technical issues, improve performance, and comply with legal obligations.

Public information

Squares is a social platform. Information you choose to make public may be visible to other users, including your profile, username, profile picture, biography, public posts, messages in public Square or place chats, event activity and other content you intentionally share.

Anonymous posting

Where Squares offers an anonymous posting option, your public identity may be hidden from other users. Squares may still retain account and technical information necessary to operate the feature, prevent abuse, enforce our rules and comply with applicable law.

Messages and communications

Messages and other communications may be stored and processed to deliver the service, maintain conversation history, investigate abuse or reports, protect users and comply with applicable law.

Photos, videos and audio

If you upload media, Squares may store and process those files so they can be displayed, transmitted, moderated and managed. Metadata associated with uploaded files may also be processed where necessary.

Events

If you create or interact with an event, Squares may process information such as event title, description, location, date, time, attendance status, saved status and related interactions. Depending on the feature and your settings, other users may be able to see whether you are interested in or attending an event.

Notifications

Squares may send push notifications about messages, replies, events, community activity and other relevant updates. You can control notification permissions through your device settings and, where available, in Squares settings.

Service providers

Squares relies on third-party service providers for functions such as authentication, database services, storage, hosting, notifications and platform services. These may include Supabase, Apple and Google. Those providers process information according to their own terms and privacy policies and, where applicable, under contractual arrangements with us.

Sharing of information

We do not sell your personal information. We may share information with service providers necessary to operate Squares, when you choose to share information publicly or with another user, when required by law or valid legal process, when necessary to protect users or the security of the service, or in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization or sale of assets.

Moderation, safety and abuse prevention

Squares may process account information, content, reports and technical information to detect spam, fraud, harassment, threats, illegal activity or violations of our Community Guidelines. Reported content may be reviewed for moderation purposes.

Data retention

We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide Squares, maintain account and service functionality, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent abuse and enforce our agreements. Retention periods may vary by data type and purpose.

Account deletion

You may request deletion of your Squares account through the account deletion feature available in the app or by following the instructions on our Delete Account page.

Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights relating to access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, portability or withdrawal of consent. To make a privacy request, contact privacy@thesquaresapp.com.

Children

Squares is not intended for children under 13 years of age. Users must meet any higher minimum age required by applicable law in their country.

International processing

Squares may process information in countries other than the country where you live. Where required, appropriate measures are used to protect personal information transferred internationally.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect information. However, no online service can guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When material changes are made, we may provide notice through the app or other appropriate means.
